Don Berman is a tax attorney at BNKJ, with broad experience in federal and international tax planning and compliance. He has several years of general legal and tax experience in a large corporate environment, and has been with BNKJ for nearly 20 years.
Don conducts much of the firm’s tax research, prepares clients’ ruling requests, handles clients’ IRS and state appeals, prepares clients’ position papers and negotiates with the IRS and state tax authorities.
He has extensive experience preparing requests for changes in accounting methods, and has prepared many responses to the IRS and state inquiries and notices. He advises and aids clients in thinking through tax and business strategies involving both major transactions and day-to-day operations.
Don stays abreast of tax changes and developments, and has prepared and reviewed many articles about tax and other financial issues.
Prior to joining BNKJ, Don gained valuable experience as a Tax Attorney in Shell Oil Company’s tax research and planning group. He also served as Senior Tax Counsel for a large Fortune 50 company in Ohio and was a Senior Trial Attorney, Office of Chief Counsel, for the Internal Revenue Service.
Don earned his BBA at the City College of New York, his JD at Yale Law School and his LLM in Taxation at New York University Law School. He is admitted to practice law in New York. He is also admitted to practice before the Internal Revenue Service and in the Tax Court.
